Prague City Information - A Fabulous City to Tour!
Prague,
Czech Republic, is a city of beauty, intrigue and charm that
is tucked away in the heart of Central Europe. For centuries,
people have been drawn to this magical city, by its rich culture,
stunning architecture and riveting history.
Located in the middle of the Czech Republic, Prague is bordered
by Germany, Austria, Poland and Slovakia, and has played a large
role in the overall Central/Eastern European influence. By the
10th century, this metropolis had become a popular destination
that boasted a majestic castle and a main town square. During
the Middle Ages, Prague experienced growth and expansion that
surpassed even Paris or London. The influence of the Holy Roman
Emperor, Charles IV, led to the foundation of the first University
in Central Europe, in addition to many other institutions.
Following the Renaissance age and the death of Emperor Rudolph
II, in 1618, the onset of the 30 Years’ War drove Prague into
a tumultuous period that did not see any reprieve until the 18th
century. Even amidst the development and rejuvenation of the
18th century, it was not until 1918 that this city, alongside
the Czechoslovakian region, became an independent Republic.
Prague’s freedom and independence was short lived, however,
due to the German occupation in World War II, followed by the
thirty years of Communist Influence. Finally, in 1989, the “Velvet
Revolution” allowed the European territory to become part of
a newly founded, Czech Republic.
Today Prague is home to over 1 million people, and the language
spoken in this Capital city is Czech. While the Czech Republic
has been a member of the European Union since 2004, it continues
to use the Czech Crown, “Kc”, as its form of currency.
Prague has quickly become an international city, with a plethora
of attractions, ranging from the Prague Castle and Charles Bridge,
to the Old Town Square and St. Nicholas Cathedral. The city
also boasts a thriving musical scene, with the National Theater,
Opera House, and several distinguished jazz venues inhabiting
the city.
Some of the twentieth century’s most famous individuals once
called Prague their “home” including author, Franz Kafka, director,
Milos Forman, and tennis phenomenon, Martina Navratilova.
This fairy tale city, has endured a history and timeline of events
that has molded it into the resilient and picturesque town it
is today. While at times the victim of tragedy and oppression,
Prague has withstood centuries of glory and pain, to become one
of the most popular destinations in the world.
